ATLANTA — Police say a woman has been found shot to death in an Atlanta home and a man seen leaving the house has been arrested following a chase. Atlanta Police spokeswoman Kim Jones says an officer on patrol in northwest Atlanta on Monday afternoon heard gunshots and went to investigate.

Police say the officer saw a man leave the house on Newport Street in a silver car and pursued it. They say the man’s car hit another vehicle and he got out and ran a short distance before he surrendered. Jones says the man, 36-year old Gene Hendrix, is charged with murder.

He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment of gunshot wound to the arm. Police say the woman, identified as 57-year-old Tammy R. Smith, had a fatal gunshot wound to the face.Police said they believe Hendrix and Smith shot at each other.Officials said they do not yet have a motive.
