An armed robber was shot and killed at a Burger King restaurant in Buckhead on Wednesday morning, Atlanta police said. They said he may be connected to a string of other Burger King robberies across several metro Atlanta counties. The shooting happened at the restaurant on Peachtree Road north of Peachtree Battle Avenue shortly before 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Just as the restaurant was opening, police said Jimmy Edgar Allen tried to hold up the store when an employee triggered a silent alarm. Police said they were able to get to the scene quickly because patrols were beefed up in the area in light of a robbery at a nearby Willy’s Mexicana Grill the previous day. When police arrived, an officer confronted Allen inside the store.

“The robber turned in the officer’s direction, and it’s my understanding at that point, the officer discharged his weapon at least two times,” Atlanta police spokesman Keith Meadows told Channel 2’s Amanda Cook.

Meadows said the suspect ran outside. The officer followed him and shot at him eight more times.

“The officer was careful to maintain tactical advantage and did what he needed to do to survive this incident,” Meadows said.

Allen collapsed in the parking lot and died.

Burger King was offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a man behind robberies in several metro counties. Meadows said Wednesday’s robber was likely behind Burger King robberies in Morrow, Clayton and Gwinnett counties.

“The M.O. was basically the same where the robber would show up when the store was opening in morning,” Meadows said.
