It may cost Fulton County as much as $140,000 to mail new property assessment notices to correct mistakes in hundreds of thousands of tax bill estimates sent out just weeks ago.

The new notices will correct grossly inflated estimates that many Atlanta property owners received in most parts of the county, except for residents of Sandy Springs, Johns Creek, Chattahoochee Hills and unincorporated South Fulton.

The county Board of Assessors decided on the re-mailing Thursday. Chief Appraiser Burt Manning said that Atlanta residents were given estimates that were thousands of dollars too high. The notices also left out municipal tax estimates in 10 cities.

About 235,000 new notices will be mailed. A 45 day deadline to appeal the assessment will then begin
