The Atlanta police SWAT team swarmed the intersection of Bolton Road and Collier Drive in northwest Atlanta just after 1 p.m.
Atlanta police Sgt. Curtis Davenport said officers were responding to a “shots fired” call.
News Chopper 2 flew over the scene as police cars and heavily armored SWAT team members lined the street.
The standoff lasted about an hour. News Chopper 2 showed police handcuffing the partially clothed suspect and strapping him to a gurney.
Police told Channel 2s Tom Jones the man who was arrested believed someone was trying to steal lawn equipment so he started shooting at men in his yard.
Police told Jones the suspect was shot in the stomach at some point during the incident, but they did not say where the bullet came from. The suspect insisted he was shot by police.
The armed man was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. Police had not identified the man or any charges.
