Police said a home invasion led to a deadly shootout in a south Fulton County neighborhood early Wednesday morning. One intruder is dead and a neighbor hit by a stray bullet is in the hospital.

Channel 2 Action News reporter Amy Napier Viteri spoke with police who said two men kicked in the door of a Creel Road home at about 1 a.m. and began firing weapons and demanded money from a 24-year-old son living there.

The man’s father heard the noise and came in with his own gun, shooting and killing one of the men, police said.

Police: Homeowner Kills Would-Be Robber

The other would-be robber was able to drive away, police said.

“It could have gotten a lot worse. Some of the homeowners, as well as the mother and the son, could have been injured, however, thankfully, in this scenario the homeowner was able to wound the perpetrator,” said Kay Lester of the Fulton County Police Department.

A 71-year-old neighbor living next door was wounded during the gunfire exchange. Police said a stray bullet went through his wall and hit him in the leg.

Officers said the neighbor was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
