Lightning may be to blame for an apartment fire in DeKalb County that left 12 people displaced.

Channel 2’s George Howell said residents reported hearing thunder before a Stone Mountain apartment complex went up in flames.

It happened Friday evening on at the Landmark at Mountainview Apartments in the 1300 block of Woodbend Drive in Stone Mountain.

One firefighter was injured at the scene by debris, officials confirmed.

The fire started on at the top floor, investigators said. They haven’t officially ruled lightning as the cause.

A severe thunderstorm watch was in effect for parts of metro Atlanta and northern Georgia until 10 p.m. Friday.

In addition to damaging straight line winds, Severe Weather Team 2 chief meteorologist Glenn Burns warned that the storms could produce intense lightning, too.

Georgia Power said 55,000 customers were without power in metro Atlanta as of 9:40 p.m. Crews were working to restore power. If you have are without power, call 888-891-0938 to report an outage.
