A marked Clayton County police car was stolen Friday. The car turned up the next day, but police are still looking for the thief.

Clayton Police Car Stolen

A Clayton officer parked his car at the Lakeside apartment complex on Riverdale Road where he lives when the car disappeared, Clayton County police spokesman Otis Willis said. He said it was stolen sometime after 7 p.m.

The marked 2001 Crown Victoria was stolen from the pool area, Willis said.

“It appears that the person was possibly joyriding,” he told Channel 2’s Rebecca Lindstrom.

Willis said no weapons were in the car.

“It’s still a working investigation but, like I said, there was forced entry to the driver side,” Willis said.

Around 8:30 a.m. Saturday, the car was found abandoned on a dead end street less than a mile away from the apartment complex. The engine was still running. Police were investigating the theft.

“It’s truly uncalled for. There’s no excuse,” Willis said. “It’s very important that we locate this person.”
