An 8-year-old child was killed when a school bus rolled over him at a bus barn in Cartersville where his mother worked, a spokesman for the Cartersville Police Department confirmed.

The fatal accident happened at about 4 p.m. Monday at the Cartersville City School Bus facility on Milner Road.

Investigators said the child was getting off a bus to go meet his mother when another bus passing by struck him. He was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

The child has been identified as Garrett Black, police said.

“It’s heartbreaking for the family,” one woman told Channel 2’s Eric Philips.

Officials said they will have counselors at the victim’s school on Tuesday.
