CONYERS, Ga. — Conyers police confirmed to Channel 2 Action News that two men are in custody after a rolling meth lab was found.Several roads, buildings and a school were closed in downtown Conyers on Friday morning just before 6 a.m. Everything has since been reopened.Pre-K, kindergarten, first-grade and second-grade students attending Pine Street Elementary were bused to C.J. Hicks Elementary. All other Pine Street Elementary students were bused to Conyers Middle School.
Police said officers stopped a pickup truck for a broken taillight and discovered a rolling meth lab inside. Officers told Channel 2 Action News reporter Kerry Kavanaugh at the scene that when the officer approached the truck he smelled a “caustic odor” and saw trash and chemicals in the bed of the truck.Officers said they seized cash, counterfeit bills and meth ready for sale or use inside the truck. Two men in the truck were taken into custody, but had to be taken to the hospital first to be decontaminated, police said.
Conyers Police Chief Gene Wilson told Channel 2 Action News that police and officials with the Rockdale County Fire Department decided to quarantine a 500-foot radius around where the truck was stopped because a suspect indicated something was currently “cooking in the truck.”Wilson said because of the caustic materials found in the truck, and the fact the area was experiencing a slight breeze, officials were concerned about the possible leak of dangerous chemicals. The quarantine was lifted at about 9 a.m.
